Tell us a little bit about your background.
I was born in Paris, and raised in LA. My family is of French Moroccan descent and I was raised around designers/ fashion. I went to Parsons where I studied business of design. I worked predominantly in publications throughout school and got my first real job doing castings at an agency.
How did you start Miaou?
It organically started as a passion project to make a pair of jeans that flattered me and my friends’ body types. I wanted to make a modern day Apple Bottom that was sophisticated and for every day.
What’s your day-to-day like?
Coffee, emails for an hour, gym, then I’lll go to the pits of midtown for my factory check up, go to my publicists’ office, do some sketches, then shower and go out.
Why did you choose to focus on pants?
I can never find a good pair of jeans that I want to wear every day. I wanted to create something that would work day or night, and be worn casually or sexy. Embellished or simple.
What goes into the design and creation process?
I’m blessed that I am my own fit model. I think fit is everything. If you know your fit, you won’t run into unexpected surprises with different fabrics and weights.
What’s your favorite piece from the collection and how do you style it?
My plaid Morgans. I wear them with the chain belt, my white sneakers and a tight ribbed sweater .
How was your NYFW event and what can we expect from your partnership with Opening Ceremony?
We threw a party with Opening Ceremony to open my 2 day pop up in Soho for all my new pieces. The party was in the basement of pop up space at 140 Avenue of the Americas. There was a nail bar at the venue put together by MP Nails and Alicia T that offered free Miaou manicures with exclusive Miaou nail art. Marie -Sophie Lockhart @lockhartembroidery did free embroideries on any purchase of Miaou jeans. @ItsmeandYou made exclusive “I’m Not Your Pussy” Miaou t-shirts, with all proceeds will got to Planned Parenthood. It was so successful! It all felt like my bat mitzvah. T-Pain came on as a surprise performer. It was hard work but paid off.
Looking forward, you can look forward to pop up shop in Paris (March 6-12 at4 Rue de Colonnes). A short film and dress collaboration with cool brand, too.
