Sabrina Diaz, Grass Roots Juicery

March 23, 2016

Meet Sabrina Diaz, the founder/owner of Grass Roots Juicery. Warning: Interview may cause you to start your own business, and find your newest juice addiction, stat.

Sabrina Diaz: I grew up in Bergen County, New Jersey. I moved to NYC to go to the Fashion Institute of Technology— I was in marketing, but then I actually took some time off and started buying and re-selling vintage and then never went back. But then I started Grass Roots. My parents have had a business in Brooklyn since ‘98, and I used to always help out. When I wanted to get a salad and a juice, there would be nothing except for a bodega and I just saw how desperate it was needed. I think I came into it more from the business side than being a health nut.

Friend of a Friend: What was the best part about starting Grass Roots?

Sabrina: The best part is connecting with costumers. When you see a customer become a regular or have a connection with your food or your juices it’s really cool. I think that’s why it’s been successful because my best friends are my customers, I think I’m my customer. A guy or a girl, someone who cares about being healthy and cares what they are putting into their body.

FOAF: What’s one piece of advice you could give somebody starting a company?

Sabrina: Just do it. Just go for it. It doesn't have to be so black and white, you kind of figure things out as you go along.

FOAF: So it’s a weekend and you want to cook something healthy, what would be your go-to dish?

Sabrina: Salmon—really easy in the oven and roasted vegetables.

FOAF: So where do you see yourself in the next 5 years?

Sabrina: Hopefully in another location, with a bigger store—maybe with a store that’s fully built for our necessities. And I really enjoy curating the retail sections, so with a store that has a strong retail section.

FOAF: How do you feel Grass Roots differentiates itself from any other juice bar out there?

Sabrina: I think most juice bars are really corporate and kind of intimidating. I just think it’s a different vibe here. We’re more welcoming and don’t take ourselves too seriously at all and I think that’s really important and what makes us really different.
