November 17, 2015

When asked about her favorite restaurants in NYC, our guest editor was nothing short of effusive. Read about her five selects, complete with mini-reviews from the chef herself.

Kiki’s is like going over to a friend's house whose mom makes the most amazingly authentic Greek food. This joint is owned by friends and you can basically find me there four to five times a week, if not more. The vibe is so cool and comfortable, there is something for everyone, and it's tucked away on a quiet street in the Lower East Side. My go to dishes always include the Octopus, the Sausage with Orange Peel, the Chopped Romaine Salad with dill, feta, and lemon, the Chicken Soup (to die for), and all of the desserts.”

LES Taqueria

I'm a Southern California girl through and through. My diet could be made up of margaritas, chips, salsa, and guacamole. This is my neighborhood jam and they are always playing classic Eighties cult films like Top Gun, Sixteen Candles, or Fast Times at Ridgemont High.”

The omakase here is out of this world and incredibly affordable. They also do an awesome dish of whole tuna rib that you scrape the sashimi off of—and when you can scrape no more they take it away and roast it, and return it to your table with a whole new array of accompaniments. It gives you an entirely new flavor experience.”

As a former Marlow & Daughters pastry chef, I am loyal to the Andrew Tarlow empire! Reynard, in the Wythe Hotel, is so perfect for any meal. You can't beat the smell of the wood burning over and the beautiful surroundings of the classic architectural interior. I eat whatever is the special because I trust and admire the chefs there."

Szechuan. Need I say more?! I fucking love spicy food and they do it right here. I go specifically for the Szechuan Peppercorn Beef Tendon, but I also love the Eggplant with Pickled Peppers, Hot and Sour Cucumbers, Dumplings in Red Oil, and the whole fried fish which could feed an army!”

"Diner is my favorite burger and fries joint, paired with a stiff cocktail or a delicious glass of wine. You can find me chilling at the bar many a winter night.”
